Why did Bush Win?

Given that the country is obviously pretty evenly divided, why did Bush get the edge over Kerry? There are hundreds of reasons, and they may all be somewhat valid, but if you accept that the election was won (or lost in Kerry's case) in Ohio, there's really only one good reason...gay marriage. With gay marriage on the ballot in Ohio, it's no surprise that conservatives had an extremely high turnout.

The Democrats have underestimated the power of the issue. If they have a backbone, they will continue to support their position, but I'm betting they'll say and do whatever it takes to win.

Hap,

You have made a good point. I think that the Bush Campaign was able to appeal to their base more effectively that the Democrats. Kerry moved towards the middle and didn't inspire the most liberal elements in the party with his fairly uncontroversial handling of the Iraq question which suggested "more of the same". However, Bush worked his base hard with wedge issues like gay marriage, abortion, and stem cell research.

Hopefully the Democrats stay true to their message and moderates realize they have a real choice. 2006 Congressional elections should be very interesting. And what about the recounts in Ohio?
